and they call themselves christians?

***NOTE*** this is NOT a post encouraging/endorsing christianity. it is merely an observation of the hypocritical nature of many "christians".

having been raised in a "christian environment" (12 yrs catholic schooling, actively participating catholic parents, 4 yrs. high school youth ministry participation), i feel i have a pretty good grasp on what the roots of christianity are embedded in. jesus loved everyone, even those who were considered society's outcasts. therefore, if you call yourself a christian, thereby claiming to live as christ did, then you too should love and tolerate all human beings. how then, oh how, can any decent so-called christian think that it is ok to not tolerate homosexuals?! what the fuck? i know it would be too much to ask these people to actually accept their homosexuality as an inherent trait they are born with, but for christ's sake (pun intended) can't they at least let them be? how does it hurt them? what are they afraid of? is anyone forcing them to watch gay people have sex? no. in fact, i think it would be way more frightening to watch two members of the religious right do it, but that's just me (and those two damn well better be married!) ;)

ahh yes, i love a good controversial post.
anyone who hasn't read the comments below under the "elections" post, we've got a nice little debate about the benefits and consequences of property tax increases.
just another way for me to procrastinate about my 5 million end-of-semester projects, too! ;)

***END NOTE*** i just realized that my "diss" on christianity may have been somewhat subconciously fueled by this past week's observations at work. now that i am in charge of the seasonal department in the front of the store, i get to have a first hand look at the outrageous mass-commercialization of THE MOST IMPORTANT christian holiday- easter. this is just another example of christians picking and choosing how and when to live by their chosen religious beliefs. what does having the exact right kind of chocolate bunny and a $10 basket shaped like a soccer ball have to do with the whole point of the holiday? please.

oooooo...i'm gonna try and keep my distance here because if i'm not careful this could turn into one really nasty comment. that said, i know exactly what you mean. i grew up in a pretty similar scenario, and the hypocracy of it all is enough to make you ralph. prime example: before we found some outdoor rinks, we used to play hockey on church parking lots. unless it was a sunday, there were never any cars. even still, we would try to play far enough away that we were not in anyones way. didn't matter. despite having an entire parking lot to choose from, people would still park right in the middle of our game.

also, have you ever noticed how, as soon as mass is over, it's every man for himself. christian values go right out the window when your trying to get out of the parking lot. heaven forbid everyone let a car or two into the line ahead of them. and of course the look straight ahead the entire time. if they don't "see" you, then you're not really there.

also, jesus kicks ass. \m/

secondly, i would now like to comment on the linked article. bullshit. flat out bullshit. first off, colleen said it best. if you're going to call yourself a christian, then you had better be damn well willing to uphold the beliefs it was built upon. now, in the eyes of most all christianity, homosexuality is considered a sin and therefore a no-no. fine. believe what you want. here's the kicker though and this is why this chick is bitch. she's suing for the right to be an asshole. so you don't like gays. big deal. your school is not asking you to have dinner with them. they're asking you to be a decent human being and respect people for who they are. even more so, your damn faith isn't asking you to persecute them either, it just doesn't agree with their decision. i'm pretty sure jesus never sent out a memo calling for some hardcore gay bashing.

finally, mr. baylor, you're justified in your worries that the government will one day eliminate the tax-exempt status of churches. that's because the shouldn't be tax-exempt in the first place! remember that whole "separation of church and state" thing? why the hell that's not enforced here is beyond me. although i'm really not TOO surprised since it's enforcement is pretty half-assed across the board as it is anyway.

also, the holy spirit rocks the shit too. \m/

I also had the 12 years of catholic schooling and such I had it figured out once that i need not attend church for the next 24 years since I covered all of that during the 12 years of every day church I got)... frankly in regards to this article I think Jesus Kicks A** too. Not only was this guy completely persecuted for everything he stood for, but he forgave everyone while they were persecuting... talk about christian values (I guess that is why they call it Christianity, but you certainly don't see that value carried over in any current religion's stances). I completely agree with both of you (so I guess that doesn't make this post as controversial if everyone agrees with you, but anyway) I personally feel that all of the homosexual persons I have known have been overly protective of their sexuality to "protect" and "keep from offending" the heterosexual population. Personally I find it much more offensive to see two heterosexuals playing tonsil hockey in public then seeing two people of the same sex holding hands. Frankly, I think that the generation I belong to (which has refused to be labelled) is much more understanding of this lifestyle and hopefully soon, our nation will realize than every attempt to limit a person's freedoms (including whom one is attracted/married to) legally has been repealed as unconstitutional, so why bother making these laws/judgements at all... everyone's ancestors in the US came to escape some persecution and live as they wanted to live as long as they didn't hurt anyone- is two persons liking each other really destoying your freedoms and happiness- and if so, what makes your happiness more important than their's?
